Why Cleaning Matters

Oriental rugs act like filters — trapping dust, grit, and allergens deep in the pile that regular vacuuming cannot remove. Over time, that embedded grit cuts the wool fibers from the inside, causing wear that looks like fading but is actually fiber loss.

Professional cleaning removes this damaging grit, revives the natural lanolin in wool fibers, and restores the depth and richness of color. We recommend professional cleaning every 1–2 years for rugs in active use.

Vacuum Regularly

Vacuum at least once a week using a suction-only setting — avoid rotary brush heads that stress the pile. Vacuum in the direction of the nap, not against it.

Professional Cleaning

A thorough professional cleaning once or twice a year removes embedded dirt, treats any developing stains, and helps the rug maintain its structural integrity.

Cleaning by Rug Type

Hand-Knotted & Hand-Woven Rugs

These are the most delicate and valuable. Always use professional cleaning. At home, blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth — never rub. Use only cold water and mild, pH-neutral soap for spot treatment.

Antique & Vintage Rugs

Antique rugs require the most careful approach. Natural dyes can bleed and aged foundations are fragile. Always consult a professional before attempting any at-home treatment on a piece over 50 years old.

Flatweave & Kilim Rugs

Flatweaves are more forgiving — they can often be gently hand-washed. However, vibrant naturally dyed kilims should still be tested for colorfastness before any wet cleaning.

Machine-Made Rugs

Generally more durable and easier to clean at home. Avoid harsh chemicals and always use natural, gentle cleaners. Many can be carefully rinsed outdoors on a warm, dry day.

Dealing with Stains

Act fast — the first 30 seconds after a spill are critical. Blot (never rub) the spill from the outside in to prevent spreading.

Red Wine & Coffee

Blot immediately. Mix one teaspoon of mild dish soap with one cup of cold water. Dab gently with a clean cloth, then rinse with cold water and blot dry.

Pet Accidents

Blot up as much liquid as possible. Apply a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution, let sit for 5 minutes, then blot dry. For persistent odors, lightly sprinkle baking soda, leave overnight, and vacuum.

Ink & Grease

Do not add water — this can spread the stain. Blot with a clean dry cloth, then bring the rug in for professional treatment as soon as possible.

When in Doubt

Call us before attempting treatment on antique or valuable rugs. The wrong product can permanently set a stain or damage natural dyes.

Sisal, Seagrass & Natural Fiber Rugs

Natural fiber rugs require a completely different approach to cleaning. They do not respond well to water — moisture causes swelling, shrinkage, mold, and permanent staining on the backing.

Daily Care

Vacuum frequently using a high-suction setting with no beater bar. The flat, tight weave doesn't trap deep dirt, so surface maintenance is simple and effective.

Spill Response

Blot liquid spills immediately — do not rub. For solid spills, let dry completely then brush away. Applying a fiber seal treatment protects against future spills.

Professional Dry Cleaning

For deep cleaning, use a dry-cleaning powder system (such as HOST) rather than wet methods. Tampa Rug Center can advise on the right approach for your specific rug.

Long-Term Care & Storage

With the right habits, a quality hand-knotted rug can outlast the home it's placed in. These simple practices make a significant difference over time.

Rotate Seasonally

Rotate your rug 180° every 6–12 months to distribute foot traffic and sunlight exposure evenly, preventing uneven fading and pile wear.

Protect from Sunlight

Direct UV exposure fades natural dyes faster than almost anything else. Use UV-filtering window treatments or reposition rugs away from direct sun when possible.

Use a Quality Rug Pad

A natural rubber or felt pad reduces friction, prevents slipping, cushions the foundation against hard floors, and improves air circulation beneath the rug.

Storing Your Rug

Clean thoroughly before storage. Roll tightly around a clean tube — never fold. Wrap in breathable cotton muslin and store in a cool, dry space. Inspect every few months for moisture or pests.
